That parking brake lever on my parent’s jeep GC doesn’t look very crumply in a crash... it looks more like impale-y

Depends on how you hit it. They’re pretty stiff when you apply it properly, i.e. Pressure applied in line with the pedal , but if you apply pressure to it in a direction not parallel to its travel, they tend to twist and fold pretty easily.

it’s actually safer if it stabs all the way through

yet another reason the pedal mounted e-brake is dumb.

I've never really heard of leg injuries from pedeal mounted parking brakes, and that was the standard parking break mechanism and location on American cars and trucks for many decades.

I heard that one of the reasons getting a Manual Guili a is impossible in America is because of crash safety standards...

But I’m also pushing it a bit; I’m using the backer plate as a footrest, while I normally drive that car with my foot planted on the mat given the seating position.

Of course, it also could’ve been that given the collision performance of cars in decades past, the potential leg injuries from those pedal mounted parking brakes wasn’t really high on the list of threats from a collision where they could come into play.

Fortunately, that pedal doesn’t have a non-collapsible column running into the engine compartment. A lot of other things are going to crush first before that pedal moves.
